As far as people calling artificial intelligence doesn't make sense to me because you are making it right. My question is what is the difference between engineering personified, and artificial intelligence. My question is should we be calling it artificial intelligence, or should we call artificial sentience, artificial concienceness.
T he parcel having survived the experience of being left out in the rain by the UPS delivery driver I took possesion of the Thecus W5000 just over a week ago. The packaging  looks like it was put together by the Microsoft marketing department, although inside the only flags are a similarly badged, and virtually useless, installation guide and the words Windows Storage Server, with 2012 R2 Essentials in smaller lettering, on the front panel of the device. The installation guide walks...
I suspect that some of my colleagues, who are used to me cursing and blinding at Microsoft and its creations on a regular basis during my work day, would be surprised to discover the fact, but I'm just about to take possession of a Thecus W5000 NAS and since there is little information out there yet for the Thecus W range I thought I'd finally find a use for this blog and record my experiences with the device for any interested parties to read. My existing NAS - a D-Link DNS323 with...

Today I finally got around to getting a Windows phone. It'll take me a few days to get it set up the way I want and to get used to using it, but so far I am really digging it. It really is a very good phone OS. Between the three choices available through VZW, I went with the Nokia Lumia 822. I really do like this phone. I've spent the past couple of hours downloading the apps I need. The only app I really need that isn't (yet) available for WP8 is one I use for work to scan my pap...

Today I discovered another great advantage to the Surface tablet over my iPad and Android tablets. I am able to print directly from the tablet to my printer either with USB cable or wireless network. I just had to plug the printer into the USB port of the Surface once and it downloaded the correct drivers. It will be really nice to not have to drag out my laptop every time they email me load permits or other paperwork. I can print them straight from the tablet. I am liking the Surface more an...

I now have a 64GB Surface Tablet. Yeah, I know, everyone knows that I am primarily a Linux user, but guess what? There aren't any true Linux tablets out there. I have an iPad (1st gen), had a 10" Android tablet until I broke it, a Nexus 7 Android tablet, and an Android phone (Galaxy S3), and I like them all well enough, but until now a tablet was, to me, just a really big phone that doesn't make phone calls as opposed to smaller, portable touch screen computers. The Surface has cha...

http://www.nest.com/living-with-nest/ Anyone out there get a Nest? I was thinking of getting one for our cottage up north. It’s a “smart” thermostat that will hook up to the Internet and let you monitor and change the temperature from remote (along with a zillion other features). But I wanted to find out if anyone has this and whether they liked it or not.
I was just on Amazon.com’s page, excited about the new Kindles supposedly about to be announced and they’re still highlighting the ones that I suspect are about to become obsolete.

Today I visited a Brookstone store to pick up a wifi enabled "smart scale" and while I was there I ran across a very cool device called a Boogie Board. It is a paperless note pad and is exactly what I have been looking for to replace the multitude of dead tree note pads I go through every year. I often need to jot down load information, phone numbers, pick up numbers, directions, etc. These are notes I don't need long term and it's such a waste to use a paper note pad, but at the same...

I’ve done something I never thought I would ever do. When I had my iPhone 3G, not once did I ever scratch it from the time I got it in December 2009 to September 2011. It did have a case on it for a month or two, but even after I took that off, I never dropped my phone. It was nice and clean. I try to keep the things I own almost new looking. Then when my contract was up for my iPhone, I decided to try Windows Phone and got the Samsung Focus. I got that specific phone because on Amazo...

Today I picked up the keyboard dock for my Asus Transformer tablet. I really like this. A tablet that can also be used as a netbook. Fantastic!

Last night I upgraded my Asus Transformer Android tablet to the latest Android release, Ice Cream Sandwich. It runs a bit snappier than it did before, and has a really nice new look. I've been playing around with it and found a new camera feature, panoramic photos. It works pretty well.

Macintosh machines are believed to be fine devices where the matter of virus and spyware is concerned. The robustness of Mac OS had previously convinced individuals that the requirement of anti-virus application and security against viruses were superfluous with respect to their computer system. This is actually the primary reason why the group of followers for these units keeps growing everyday. It might be the super fast growth in the size of the market or contradictory use of Macintosh co...
A historian is sometimes forced to read books published several decades, in some case even centuries back, in order to tease out information that is relevant. Antony Grafton, in his The Footnote: A Curious History has drawn attention to this rather interesting aspect of historical research. Unlike other strands of knowledge in which one can see a cumulative increase in human understanding, in historical research there is search for new quetions about the past and new ways of understanding and...

How many commercials does it take to get Best Buy mad enough to send a “ Cease and Desist ” letter to Newegg.com? According to Newegg and Maximum PC, just one. It seems that Best Buy felt “concerned” and “offended” when they found out that Newegg’s new advertising campaign seemed to be taking shots at the Big Electronics chain. One of complaints Best Buy had on their “Cease and Desist” letter to Newegg was about a logo Newegg is currently using on their Geek On advertising where apparentl...
