Sad news (for me, as a fan of the University of Maryland Terrapins) yesterday as men’s basketball coach Gary Williams announced (surprisingly) that he is retiring.

I’m sad about this because it seems that Coach Williams was seemingly constantly dodging calls for his ouster despite an impressive track record and despite being somewhat handicapped by events that transpired before he got to Maryland.  Recruiting against Duke and University of North Carolina was never easy for him, but as ...

Lebron James returns to Cleveland tonite as a member of the Miami Heat.  His new team takes on his old team and there's a lot of speculation about what the fan reaction will be, and a bit more on what it should be.

Here's the right answer for Cleveland fans:  cheer the guy.

I am sure that there are people that read that sentence and wonder just what the heck I've been smoking, snorting, or injesting, but bear with me a minute...

Cleveland fans should be cheering when James is ...

The Atlanta Hawks today acquired guard wow gold from the Sacramento Kings in exchange for Anthony Johnson, Tyronn Lue, Shelden Williams, Lorenzen Wright and a 2008 second round draft pick according to Hawks Executive Vice President/General Manager Billy Knight.

“We’re happy to be able to bring in a player of Mike’s caliber,” Knight said. “He’s one of the premier point guards in the league and a proven winner going back to his college days at Arizona. Hi...

The NCAA has decided to try to put an end to head coaches acting like two-year-old girls on the basketball sideline for the upcoming 2007-2008 season. On the eve of the day basketball practices can begin for both men and women’s NCAA teams across the country, the leading collegiate athletic association has announced that technical fouls will be issued to bench participants more freely. Some infractions that will warrant a technical foul without warning include disrespectfully addressing an offic...

So news comes out today that David Stern (NBA Commissioner) and the NBA are considering tweaks to the NBA draft rules to maintain competitive balance and to help keep the NBA draft lottery odds from being a consideration for teams that have played poorly throughout the year.

Stern and the NBA are concerned that some teams may be coasting at the end of the season and not playing competitively when they could and should because they'd blow their chance at having better odds in the draft lottery...

Well, on the plus side the Terps got one game further in the 2007 NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament than archrivals Duke did, but not any further than that.

Congrats Butler.  Your team played tough and worked hard for that win and you deserve to continue on the quest.  I wish you all the best of luck as you go.

My beloved Terps just couldn't stop Butler today, partly because of what I think is somewhat a systemic problem for them -- a very poor outside game, and poor defense agains...

Last year, the Weber State Wildcats (yeah, that's-a my school, peoples) had the WORST record in the entire conference. (We're in the Big Sky.) This is not surprising; we're a commuter school, with an inordinate amount of nontraditional students. (Almost more than we have traditional students.)

But this year, we got a new head coach, Randy Rahe. And he's turned our horrible season last year, worst in the conference, into the BEST in the conference. Yeah, we're number one. So we've had th...

Yep!  Not since the early 80s has the Commonwealth of Virginia been so endowed in the sport of hoops!  This year, barring an injustice on the order of the Immaculate reception, Virginia should have 3, maybe 4, teams in the big dance!

Virginia Commonwealth University (the only school that gets the name right) qualified last night.  UVA and Va. Tech should be in by virtue of beating every top tier team in the ACC (they just could not figure out how to beat the also rans).  O...

I know it's getting to be late for this, but I have two different fantasy hoops leagues with openings if anyone is interested.  I'd love to have anyone that cares to take teams in either league.  Please feel free to jump in and help fill up spots in the leagues.  If you are very competitive, all the better.  Even if you aren't, jump in and get your feet wet in these fairly simplistic fantasy leagues.

Thanks in advance and good luck to anyone that does sign up!

Ever since Kobe Bryant's ego pushed Shaquille O'Neal out of L.A., I've said, "If there's any justice, L.A. will fall apart and the Heat (Shaq's new team) will win the championship." I even wrote an unpublished article entitled "Die, Lakers, Die!" that expressed those sentiments.

Last night, winning their first game in Dallas since 2002, the Miami Heat walked away with the NBA Championship. Meanwhile, in their first Shaq-less year the Lakers couldn't even make the playoffs. This year the Phoen...

I started to use the headline for one of those "oh, how the mighty have fallen" lines, but with limited space, and in not really wanting to really mis-direct the readers and give a fine school a bad name, I think the one I have now is more clear.

As a card-carrying member of Terrapin nation, I used to love to hate on the N.C. State Wolfpack. They won many battles against my beloved Terps, and kept them out of the NCAA tourney more times than I could count back in my youth.

Unfortunately ...
Oh my goodness... I cannot believe this year.

I am not the most talented NCAA tournament bracket picker. I am the first to admit that I don't know the teams or their relative strengths well enough to make more than an uneducated guess at filling out the bracket. But I enjoy pitching in my five dollars to the club and hope for the best. I think it's like playing the lottery, but for me it's a quick pick.

Okay: here is what I predicted, at least for the Final Four...

Texas beating Du...

Some people live for the Superbowl.  I say "Meh."

Others long for the World Series.  Tell me who won.

The NBA playoffs and championship are what yet other people love.  Pompous ball-hogs.

Me, I live for March.  And the Madness.  Oh yeah, nothing better than March Madness.  Game after game, some of the best basketball talent you will ever see, and without a doubt the best team play of anything.  There will be Cinderella stories, upsets, teams that play ...

It was a rivalry game. The crowd was on the refs like photographers on Britney. BG's coach was jabbering like his mentor Bobby Knight. One of the BG players got a technical foul. People kept falling to the ground as the result of tough playing and jockeying for position. One player even came out from under the basket with a faceful of blood after fouling the ballhandler.

I think I've made my point.

What was so interesting about this game was that after following and rooting for Toledo all ...
