The advent of Windows 7 heralded the arrival of a new OS that made me seriously consider upgrading from XP. The ease of Driver installation under Win7 is wonderous, it just happens! I've upgraded a PC's Motherboard and CPU, Windows 7 just dealt with it - brillent.I bet that all sounds pretty idiolistic, or worse I work for Microsoft. But alas that bubble has now burst, and no I don't.A little background first, before a little rant Our HTPC was working perfectly on the sound front. The PC is co...

Can you squeeze that a little tighter pleaseOver the last several years 'Cable' TV had a nice advantage over their satellite competitors, primarily thanks to the limited bandwidth that is available for distribution of television programming sent over satellite.  With satellite TV service (DirecTV and Dish Network) there were only so many channels worth of capacity and the only way to deliver more channels was to squeeze the content into the limited bandwidth, similarly to overloading the freeway with more and more vehicles with each vehicle riding closer and

The Washington Times has an interesting article in their Saturday 19 April 2008 edition. Front page (of all places).  In the article lies the answer for where the heck is all of the HD content that purchasers of nice, fancy (and not so fancy), new HD capable televisions should be looking for.  Short answer: delayed because of costs

The original article can be found here: Cost keeps HD programs from coming into full focus

There's a few interesting details in the original article, and for me,

Excellent article from HDTV Magazine here: Which is More Consumer Friendly: HD DVD or Blu-ray?

I don't want to spoil the article, but I give the author credit for a nice review of the technical merits of which format (Blu-ray disc or HD DVD) is more consumer friendly.  Some great points raised and a balanced look at counters to those points.  Take the time to read the article, it's well worth your time.

With the advent of several more channels of high definition programming via providers like DirecTV, Dish Network, FiOS and cable companies, the time is nigh to declare that STRETCH-O-VISION must end and original aspect ratio must rule the day (and night).

You may be asking what I'm referring to, and/or you might need some definitions here, so here goes.

Apologies to Sony Playstation 3 fan-boyz and galz, or to other Home Theatre Blu-Ray fans, but I wish that the Blu-ray standard would just die, die, die already.

Not that I like supporting Microsoft and other HD-DVD format backers any more than I like Sony but the thought that having bought the HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 was possibly a bad decision is just irritating.  Looking over the next few months of releases in both formats it seems that the Blu-ray folks are pumping out quite a ...

Just curious of which readers have made the move to Hi-def TV in their households.

Do you currently have at least one Hi-Def TV in your home?  If so, how long have you had it, and do you have just one or more than that?

Are you staying with standard def, at least for now?  Are you perhaps planning to move to Hi-Def in the near future, or will you be waiting for some time?  What's the deciding factor for you?

My own answers below in the comments area.

Okay, I finally gave in and bought a 42" Plasma TV., a Toshiba 42HP66. The picture is stunning, much warmer than either the Samsung or Panasonic TVs that I looked at. See Link

I have a large collection of DVDs and intend to continue to play them. Does it pay to buy an upconverting DVD and if so, is the Oppo 981 worth investing in? (See Link for the Oppo's specs.)

Sound is also a consideration for me, I have an Onkyo HT-R520 6.1 Home Theater and I want the best sound possible.
