The problem with being success is that it tends to make whatever you do bigger.  I never intended Stardock to get as large as it is today. I remember years ago saying that I would put a hard limit on Stardock’s growth at 50 people.  That seems quaint now. For those of you reading this who worry the American dream is going away, fear not. I started the company with nothing. No venture capital. I was in a dorm room and working multiple jobs to pay for school. You can still succeed w...
I feel bad for the current generation of kids in some respects. They are being told that intelligence is the end-all be-all. It’s all about being smart. In reality, no, it’s not.  Being intelligent is helpful but it isn’t a key ingredient to success.  Being above average in intellect is probably a pre-requisite for being successful but beyond that, it does very little. So what does matter? That is, in the real world, what makes the difference? In a nutshell it’s 3 things...

That’s right folks, this week I was so blessed to see both of these animals. I was very surprised to see both of them right in the city. Near where I work at the NIE there are quite a number of large trees with vines on them. Well on Wednesday I noticed some activity in the trees. It turns out there were two monkeys playing in the trees. I had heard previously that they play in the trees around work but I had never seen them before. I was so excited I got out my camera right away. However...

Time for another weekly installment from your Norteño in Asia! Well this week was very eventful. Our main objective this week was to make sure our training happened tomorrow. The big wig at the MoE contacted the provincial IT managers on Monday and told them our criteria for participants. My team lead and I were a bit skeptical given the complexity of the bureaucracy here in Sri Lanka. We were pleasantly surprised to meet with our big wig and have him hand us a participant list on ...

So earlier in the week I turned on the light in by bedroom and guess what I saw crawling around on the wall. Any guesses? I was pleasantly surprised to see a gecko darting around on my wall. It was a good thing I heard about them earlier in the day or I might have freaked out. I couldn't believe how fast that thing moved. I tried my best to get a photo of it but I was no match for the speed of my Gecko Roman. Now I have a mascot! Anyway, things have gone good here for the first week. W...

LUNCH WITH ANDREW TARBUCK   By Pranay Gupte   Andrew Tarbuck has one of those visages that don’t lend it to pinning down his age. Of course, he isn’t much older than his early 30’s, but he could jolly well pass off as a younger graduate student at Newcastle University in Britain, or the Chester College of Law, his alma maters.   One thing is for sure: Mr. Tarbuck, whose academic career was lined by vigorous rugby competitions, is very fit...

Delta Air Lines said it plans to cut overall flight capacity by...

Most HR managers genuinely believe strategically planned staff training play a major role in addressing the challenges inevitable in the wake of an economic slowdown. These same managers would also genuinely agree that in practice IT training is one the first budgets to be cut during economic downturn after freezing recruitment. (Just in case a definition: A recession is when the economy shrinks for 2 consecutive quarters. A depression is when the economy shrinks by more than 10%). If you d...
