The latest directory of job titles from Occupational Information Network (O*Net) features a variety of new entries that many people have never heard before. Some of these jobs -- at least the duties -- have been around in some form for a while. What's new is a "professional pathway" for these careers, according to employment expert and author Laurence Shatkin. "O*Net officially recognizes job titles once there is a critical mass of workers in those jobs and a clear road map for attaining ...
No matter your resume and talents, if you mess up a job interview you won't get that position. In today's tough economy you need every possible edge. As authors of the new book, "I Hate People! Kick Loose from the Overbearing and Underhanded Jerks at Work and Get What you Want Out of Your Job," we see it as a simple equation: You want to be liked -- not hated. Here are 10 simple things to do that will dramatically increase your chances: from wearing the right expression, to knowing what not...
gas, flatulenceCertain foods are common causes of flatulence, and temporarily avoiding these foods can help you determine if they’re a problem for you. According to the Mayo Clinic Health Letter, the following foods are likely to cause gassiness: * Dairy products, which contain sugar lactose that causes gas * Vegetables, including onions, radishes, cabbage, celery, carrots, brussel sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower and legumes * Fr...
The Sympathy/Pity Con: An attempt to appeal to the other person's compassion to get the other person to give in. Common in children, but also used by adults, an example would be: "All my friends get to stay out late and they make fun of me so can I...". If you have kids you know this one. The Common Sense Con: What does it mean when someone says: "Well, it's common sense, you know"? Usually it means they don't know how to support their position, so they fall back to this completely empty stat...
So, to your shock and amazement, I haven't been lighting up ye ole' Information Superhighway since I've been back. I'm sure my one remaining reader has noticed. Why? My life has been one nasty ass tangled up ball of twine. My first impressions when I came back were largely about how cold and green everything was here, how good the food was, and how fat all the Americans looked. Now? I'm irritated a lot. Really irritated. Everything used to wash over me pretty good, and...
A tip is not included in the price of your room at most hotels. I was just wondering if you tip your hotel housekeeper. If you do, how much do you leave? When I go in to clean a room I am happy with 2 dollars or more. I think the 2 dollar tips are usually from a one night stay. The most I have recieved is like a 10 dollar tip in a room. I think as those as at least a 3 night stay.
In response: I suppose I could just tell them to go online (I believe militaryonesource.com directs servicemembers to free versions of the commercially available products, like TurboTax), but it defeats the purpose of this class pretty well. I did comment to my supervisor this morning that I would probably just use TurboTax for my own again this year... and she said that it doesn't really instill confidence when the guy tagged for Tax Assistant isn't going to do his own. Which is fine, sin...
I volunteered for this additional duty position over half a year ago, as the alternate. I started to figure that it was something my unit didn't take seriously, since I didn't have any training and I was the "alternate" to an empty primary position (ever since Geezer left the service). Then, at the beginning of the calendar year, the base started directing all servicemembers to see their Unit Tax Representatives for assistance with filing. (What was I supposed to tell them, go online? For...
Mothers are often viewed as matronly and kind of asexual. The new excitement about MILFs notwithstanding, it seems like men have often taken a hands-off approach to pregnant women. Some men are turned off by the possibility that they may "hurt the baby" (what with their massive, cervix destroying penises, haha) while others somehow imagine that the baby "knows" and can see daddy's willy aiming at him during sexual activities. Other men want to view mothers-to-be as sacred and pure and untouc...
I got an email from Wes Higgins, who was my point of contact for coordinating the color guard for the roping event, and he let me know that they made about $22,000 for the Wounded Warrior Program. He also forwarded a story, a description of one of the great trips that they take injured veterans on. I'm reproducing it here without really knowing the author, so if they contact me to ask me to take it down, I will. I just thought that it was a great thing to share. It was the evening of ...
Over a month ago, a former Army Staff Sergeant contacted my Battalion to request an Army color guard for a local event. After checking with the legal office, my command okayed our participation, and I secured the assistance of three other volunteer NonCommissioned Officers to perform the drill duties. I really didn't know much about the event, or the organization... but now I wish I did, and I would have publicized it to the entirety of our unit. Only after the event did I find this on...
I just started working in a new building. I'm quickly approaching the end of my third week here. Someone who uses the same men's room as I has been inserting suppositories daily in one of the toilet stalls. Know how I know? He leaves behind the suppository wrapper on the ledge over the toilet paper. Every day, same stall, there's a wrapper. If it wasn't absolutely disgusting to pick up, I'm seriously thinking of taping it to an index card, attaching it to the bathroom mirror w...
I'm the child who hated group assignments in school. I never felt like I could depend on other people. This is part of my personality and usually a flaw since I seem to think I am the only one who can do things "right." Sometimes people are dependable if you will just give them a chance. Sometimes they aren't... This past week I began teaching 5th grade Language Arts. My homeroom class was made up from students from five other classes. I also team teach with another teacher. So I am respon...
It's been a while since I've found myself unable to put into words what I am feeling. I have knee-jerk reactions. I get emotional when it's someone or something that I care very deeply about; I go into mood swings, I"m up and I'm down; I try not to overreact because I have to consider the people around me, mainly my children, I pray even more than I usually do and I have my private talks (with God) even more than I usually do. I feel at a loss and helpless and past experiences replay ...
Jason Hanna...I don't know if you'll ever see this, but here is your tribute, buddy. Ladies and Gentlemen of the Kort, my real name is Steve, and for the past year I have had the honor to run what is possibly the most successful rock band in the history of Navy music, because yes, though it seems odd to many, being a musician in the US Navy is actually a job - it's my job, and it's Jason Hanna's job. I first met Jason while stationed in Newport, Rhode Island. He's a trumpet player, spe...
