Hi, Can anybody recommend any turn-based strategy games? Mostly when I find a "strategy" game it really turns out to be city-building or tactics ("real-time strategy"). I am looking for something like Civilisation, Colonisation, or Alpha Centauri. I tried Civilisation 4, but it is horribly over-graphiced and required the DVD to be in the drive. Also, it only runs in fullscreen mode. I want something I can play in a window while watching DVDs or listening to podcasts for a few hours. Doe...
I absolutely love this "rise of the social single-player game" sort of mini-march I'm seeing occur in the industry right now with games like Spore, Fable 2, and Animal Crossing. With the announcement of The Sims 3 came a great deal of information about what EA Sims felt were the important parts of the Sims 2 and, thankfully, it seems they truly understand what was important about The Sims as a franchise. When it comes down to it, the Sims has never been about house decoration nor has it been abo...
Hi, everyone. I remember when Civilization IV came out in 2005, it was hailed as one of the best strategy games of all times. I didn't buy it, or even play it, back then. But recently, I saw the release of an expansion pack called "Beyond the Sword," which got great reviews and looks very cool. So, I was wondering what you guys think of Civilization IV now, a little over 2 years after its release. Is it still worth getting? Specifically, * Do you still play Civilization IV? * Wh...
Jump to: The Introduction :: Total Annihilation :: Starcraft :: Homeworld :: Warcraft III :: Rise of Nations :: The Conclusion The Introduction Rerevisited When I look back upon the last two segments of this series -- here are links to Part 1 and Part 2 for the unenlightened -- I realize just how much of an overly verbose writer I can be at times. For the ADD/ADHD crowd out there who really wishes I was more concise, I do apologize; the unnecessarily lengthy written form has been and will mo...
I've been playing a totally free war game for the past week called SteelPanthers: Main Battle Tank (SPMBT), and it sure has a lot to recommend it.Based on the Steel Panthers II: Modern Battles engine, this widelyexpanded version allows players to set up a wide variety of battle typesthroughout the 1946-2020 period. Personally, I like to fight defensively, so I usually try to hold off anassault, but each player can set up the conditions they want to fight under. With so many options available,...
I defeated Bush today. As Kerry. In the Political Machine that is. The first beta is going out tomorrow and I played the build we have up on Stardock Central (available privately). It'll be available tomorrow to all users of Drengin.net. I'm not fully satisfied with the game play so far. We'll be tweaking the heck out of the game in the coming weeks. But I must say, even as a beta, I'm having a pretty good time. Which isn't something I could say for Galactic Civilizations which I...
It's now 2:58am. I have been playing RISK on the computer for a solid 4 hours, and once again, the computer has fucked me over. For the first time, I actually had a chance of winning. I chose to play the Europe map, and ended up with the entire outskirts of the map, while the computer chose all of france and germany with some scattered troops surrounding. My plan was simple: Develop juggernaut generals then squish in! Oh I was playing Ultimate Risk. This one has no dice, but generals, forts, cap...
I love strategy games. That doesn't necessarily mean I am that great at them, but real time strategy (RTS) games certainly comprise the majority of my gaming library. I love building bases, seeing my towns/complexes grow and become more intricate, more sophisticated. And I love churning out units. Lots and lots of units. Oh yeah, gaming goodness. But I hate resourcing. In a big way. And therein lies the inherent beauty of what I consider to be a subgenre of the RTS games: Real Time ...
War Looms On The HorizonThe dark clouds of conflict began building following the announcement of the upcoming alliance war, dubbed The Clone War. This conflict is actually a quite amicable one which is intended to inspire more activity and excitement in the Metaverse. Teams consisting of no more than 3 empires are banding together to compete in a month long tournament which will collect all raw scores and compare them to the other teams. There will not be just one winner in the competition, as t...
