The 2021 Colors of the Year
January 11, 2021 by Island Dog on ID's place to speak
Every year the Pantone Color Institute announces color(s) that will express the "mood" of the year. They have picked two interesting choices which are Ultimate Gray and Illuminating. From their blog : "PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating, two independent colors that highlight how different elements come together to support one another, best express the mood for Pantone Color of the Year 2021. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimis...

Celebrating tyranny
January 9, 2021 by Frogboy on Brad Wardell - Skinning the frog
I found this article quite thought provoking.  https://pjmedia.com/columns/dennis-prager/2021/01/05/i-now-better-understand-the-good-german-n1305198 This past week we didn't just see the banning of Trump for "inciting violence" (despite said inciting is never included for people to judge for themselves).  Countless other people were banned and even groups like #walkaway on Facebook were banned. Regardless of your politics, this is nothing to celebrate.  I remember a time...

Building a better social media messaging site
January 8, 2021 by Frogboy on Brad Wardell - Skinning the frog
Given recent events, I was thinking that maybe there's an opportunity to rethink social media platforms entirely. The current leaders like Twitter and Facebook are actually fairly primitive from a technical point of view.  Not their fault. They were built when they were built. If you were to create a new social media site today you wouldn't be able to get away with being like those sites because the distributors of the social media apps (Apple, Google) won't tolerate the growing pains...

A Sneak Peek of DeskScapes 11: Designing your own Backgrounds
January 7, 2021 by Tatiora on tatiora
Happy New Year! Here’s hoping that 2021 is significantly kinder to us than 2020 was. To get back into the swing of things (I’ve just enjoyed a 2-week vacation and I need to find my groove again), let’s take another look at DeskScapes 11! I gave a little preview of the upcoming version of Deskscapes just before our holiday break, but today I want to focus on something a little more specific within the app: designing your own backgrounds (Dreams).  There are...

Ringing in the New Year...with Dancing Robots!?
January 6, 2021 by Tatiora on tatiora
Happy 2021, everyone! Now that the holidays are over, it's back to accidentally writing the wrong year on everything for at least two weeks before everything starts to normalize and feel like routine again. Anyone have any major New Years resolutions? This is a little delayed, since it came out about a week ago, but I just couldn't stand the thought of people missing out on some dancing robots to ring in 2021. Boston Dynamics , who have become known over the last several years for their r...

What games did you pick up during the Steam Winter Sale?
January 4, 2021 by Tatiora on tatiora
Happy New Year! Hopefully all of you have had a safe and restful holiday season. It's back to work for all of us here at Stardock, but believe me: I got quite a lot of playtime in during my break!  My backlog of games is such that I didn't buy too much during the sale, but I still snagged a few things at some pretty great prices. I finally picked up Star Wars Battlefront II and, although I'm not such a great shot (at least I'm true to Stormtrooper lore when playing as an Imperial!) ...

How can forums compete with Reddit?
December 25, 2020 by Frogboy on Brad Wardell - Skinning the frog
I'll be honest with you.  I spend a lot of time on Reddit.    One can see a direct correlation between the rice of Reddit (and to a lesser extent Twitter and Facebook) and the fall of blogs and forums. And I think that's a shame because the nice thing about forums is that you get to know the regulars and there are many nice features on forums that Reddit doesn't have. Still, the UI on many forums, including ours, is not as good as I'd like to see.  Which makes me won...

GalCiv at the end of 2020
December 25, 2020 by Frogboy on Brad Wardell - Skinning the frog
It's hard to believe that GalCiv III was released over 5 years ago.  Since then, we've had a few major expansions and a lot of DLC. As we enter 2021, we have finally reached the stage where GalCiv III won't be seeing any new DLC but will continue to get updates in the form of balance, fixes and performance improvements as we find them.  Updates will be less frequent as QA time is particularly precious right now. We are very proud of how Galactic Civilizations III evolved.  W...

December 23, 2020 by Tatiora on tatiora
As 2020 draws to a close (I thought it would never end, to be honest!) I thought we would take a look back on Object Desktop and all of the great apps and updates we’ve added this year.  If you’re unfamiliar with O bject Desktop , it’s a suite of desktop enhancement apps that lets you completely customize your Windows experience. It has several award-winning applications - including Fences , Groupy , and Multiplicity - and will completely transf...

Baby Yoda can visit your living room thanks to Google AR!
December 23, 2020 by Tatiora on tatiora
When I wrote this, it was Friday morning of the season finale for The Mandalorian and no - I hadn't watched it yet! Believe me, my plan was to do that first thing after work. I have always had a soft spot for cute things, and let's be real: Baby Yoda (name redacted because spoilers) is about as cute as it gets. I also admit to having a bit of a weakness for clever things like little creatures that live on your computer desktop or, since the innovation of things like Pokemon Go, critters you c...
