Behind the scenes, elephant trainer Tim Frisco instructs would-be trainers how to dominate elephants and make them perform circus tricks. “Sink that hook into ’em. When you hear that screaming, then you know you got their attention.” An elephant trumpets in agony as Frisco’s bullhook, with its sharp metal hook and spiked end, tears through her sensitive skin. Frisco, a Carson & Barnes elephant trainer, learned the trade from his father, a former trainer for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Baile...

The Lowdown on Dissection Millions of animals are killed and dissected in schools each year. Today, many students protest and educators question the destruction of life in the name of education. People are concerned not only about taking the life of innocent animals, but also about the pain and suffering that animals usually experience on the way to the dissection table. Dissection Hurts Animals Animals used in the dissection industry suffer terribly before they reach the classroom. P...

Henry is wall eyed.  I noticed it at first a couple fo days ago, and thought that it was a one-off ocurrence. Not so.  He's looked wall-eyed numerous times today.  I think it's cute; Dave thinks that it's a physical confirmation of his belief that Henry's "not all there".  I think he's "all there", he's smarter at this young age than our other dog was at 2 years.  He asked to go outside today, he sat by the screen door and whined until I opened it, and then he tro...

Henry's first couple of nights at home have gone...well, noisily.  He's being crate trained, and he's howled and cried intermittently most of the night.  It doesn't bother me too much, I know that he's not hungry, thirsty, or cold and that he doesn't need to go to the bathroom - that he's just lonely and crying for attention.  The kids however...Jake was almost in tears last night.  "it hurts me to hear him cry, mom" he said.  I haven't given in , and Henry eventual...

hey all. Ive had my horse, Desi, ,for 7 years... got her when i was 11. Shes a sorrel Overo mare, and she turns 15 in march. I havent been showing her for about 3 years, and have really lost interest in riding for the past 2. Mom and i have been struggling with this decision for the past year, and frankly, i gave in to her nagging about " she needs a job. shes "wasting away" out in the field because you dont want to ride her." So, we went to dream horse.com and actually found a want ad, fro...

I have declared war on the squirrels. I caught them digging up my daffodil and crocus bulbs this morning.  They had eaten some on the spot, and had made off with the others and taken them up to their nest.  I don't know how many they managed to pilfer before I busted them, but I do know that even after I had gone out and chased them off they came back for some more.  I sat at my kitchen window and watched one particularly bold one dig around in the flower bed....then I hammered...

I wanted to share with you the tale of a destructive dog. Chyna was a good girl....Dave's dog, an American Staffordshire terrier (for those who don't know, that's the genetic cousin of the American pitbull)..the scarediest AmStaff I ever met.  We used to live in a house that had 2 flights of stairs in it.  It took Chyna 3 months to learn how to walk those stairs. She was afraid to...she'd stand at the top, stiff legged and panting, whilst we stood at the bottom, calling and encourag...

I get my new baby boy in 10 days' time.  Henry the miniature dacshund will be coming home on the 25th. I have his crate alll ready for him. I found a small piece of shearling that is the perfect size for the floor of his kennel, so he'll have somehting soft to lay on.  I've bought him toys - he has a rubber squeaky monster-looking-thing, a small squeaky teddy bear, and a bigger bear that has rope for arms and legs...good for gnawing and chewing on.  I have puppy chow,...

So you stayed up super late playing Doom III, crawled under the covers at 5 a.m., and half an hour later the alarm goes off. Your partner bounds out of bed with the speed of Stupendous Man and the alacrity of Hobbes greeting Calvin when he comes home from school. “Yay!” your partner says. “Morning is here! We can seize the day!” And then you shoot her and go back to sleep. * That’s the perspective I don’t share. Here’s my side: I crawl into bed at 10:30 p.m. and read until I ...
Alex Murdoch - News.com.au DINGOES have formed a superpack on the same south-east Queensland island where a young boy was mauled to death three years ago, a dingo expert said today. University of Queensland researcher Nick Baker said the dingoes of Fraser Island appeared to have developed a tolerance for each other which was uncharacteristic of their breed. He said dingoes traditionally lived and hunted in small territorial packs which would defend their food and territory to the ...

A totally under-utilized plant in western society. It's cheap to raise, cheap to maintain, and very renewable. Yet it's got this astigmatizm of "It gets you high!" attached to it. It can produce paper, rope, cloth, and it's seeds are even able to produce a fuel that's useable in vehicles, yet it's illegal in the States. We're not allowed to grow it because it contains THC, the active chemical of marijuana. Yet suggest smoking it to any knowledgeable smoker and they would laugh at you...
