On April 30th I wrote an article about seeing a bunny in the yard . It was a big one! Since then, I have seen that bunny (and another one) hanging around in various places in my yard. Today as I was mowing the lawn, another little guy ran out of the bushes as I was walking past. I followed him around the house, and caught up with the little one next to my garage. (For some reason, rabbits like to hang out along the north side of my garage.) I was able to get a couple ...
Yesterday morning while getting ready for work, some unusual fence rattling outside prompted me to look out my second story bathroom window to find what was either the largest mouse ever, or the cutest rat, trying to bust into my neighbor's garbage can. We live in a row of townhouses on a main road. For the first time in 4 years, this spring has brought a rodent problem to the neighborhood. There was a rat hanging about in our yard. My landlords agreed to put out poison, and, although I...
I have taken to feeding squirrels on my back deck. It's a bit ironic because I said that I would post an article here daily (across different categories), but for the past couple days I haven't posted anything, mainly because I've been in a creative dry spell, and I've taken to feeding the squirrels on the back deck. I find myself watching the mammal dynamic taking place right in front of me, as oppsosed to writing something here. I've come to believe that there are about 4 or 5 of the...
LESSONS FROM A DOG 1. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy ride. 2. Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy. 3. When loved ones come home, always run to greet them. 4. When it's in your best interest, always practice obedience. 5. Enjoy it when someone wants to rub your tummy. 6. Take naps and always stretch before rising. 7. Run, romp, and play daily. 8. Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. 9. Be loyal. 10. Never pretend to be so...
I got another crab for my birthday, and I named him Tudley. It's a funny name, but there's a standing joke behind it...when my little boy (Jake) was small he had difficulty saying 'r'. It would come out sounding like 'ahhhhh'. One day he had been out in the yard and had stepped in some dog poo...and he said "I trod in a tud". So, ever since then, we've made a point of saying 'tud' not 'turd' in Jake's presence. When I picked up this crab out of the tank at the store to...
I guess its time to write a blog that's important. Not that others are not important. I guess I mean important to me. I just finished a semester of Environmental Sociology. It's a newer branch of sociology that focuses on how humans interact and our social structure affects our relationship with nature. This class has opened my mind to a few things. I thought I'd share them with you guys and please feel free to respond as you see fit. obesity has been on the rise since technology h...
Kitty Kats are great except when they're in heat Meow, meow, meow scratching at the back door Can't afford to get her spade can't afford more kitties to be made Human society will just kill her Oh decisions! Yeah, don't get pets unless you plan on getting them spade. I got stuck with 2 female cats actually, from my marriage. Ex hubby promised he would take the girls when he left and some how they're still with me I don't want to give them away because my cats are like my kids. ...
My sons went with there grandmother to a carnival last weekend and they won goldfish while they were there. I explained in the car that I really didn't expect the fish would live long because carnivals don't treat them very well and they were in bags all day. They survived the trip home so we stopped by the store and got them a fish starter set up that had a big enough bowl for two small goldfish, food, droplets to dechlorinate the tap water and a care manual. We also got some col...
Well, I was right about my cat being in labor. At 3 am I awoke to the sound of 4 tiny kittens mewing.....I watched for a while to make sure everything was ok with mom and the babies, then went back to bed. I got up 15 mins later to find another one crawling around, and then was priveleged enough to see number 6 be born. So far we have one totally black one and the rest area dark gray color...2 have white chins. It makes me question paternity; the tom that I thought was the...
Our cat Pixie is due to have kittens on Monday, but I think she's laboring already. She hasn't eaten today, she's slept more than usual, when she is awake she's wandering around meowing and won't leave our sides. I laid down on my bed for a nap this afternoon and she came and laid right next to me...highly unusual. The kittens have been really active as well; she laid on the living room floor this afternoon and we could see them writhing around in her belly. I've helpe...
June 4~ All morning Potential (one of our alpacas) looked rather tired and in pain. Close to noon she started going in to hard labour. It's a beautiful sight, a baby being born. However, I was completely unemotional over this birth, for some reason. Just my mood I suppose. You always hope for a girl, but we got a boy. He's a cute little bugger, though. All white like him mom, with a brownish/burgendy tail, like his father. I don't know what we're gunna name him yet. Maybe Tic Tac, wh...
The following article was written by Davey, my almost-10-year-old-son. I got a new crab! His name is Bob. He is out-going,tough,and he loves to climb. Bob makes my mom laugh. Jacques and Bob are buddies. Martin and Bob are "male-bonding". We got them a new club where they party. Bob is always on the wall,in the club, sleeping on the wall,or in my hand. Bob is now giving Jacques climbing lessons. Jacques make it about half-way up the...
Martin, my grumpy hermit crab, moved shells today. He had given up trying to intimidate Jacques into 'fessing up up his shell and had spent the last 3 days tucked up in his shell. When we picked him up for any reason, he'd poke out his claw and try to pinch us. He didn't even come out for his bath. When I was at the pet store today, I saw a shell that was about the same shape and size as Jacques, so I thought I'd buy it and see if Martin would find it acceptable. My plan wo...
Martin has decided that he wants Jacques shell and will have it at any cost. He has flipped Jacques over, has put his claw in Jacques shell, is rocking him back and forth and is chirping away like no-body's business. I went to look up this behaviour on the internet, and sure enough, its a shell fight. The advice is to let them fight...we have spare shells around for the loser to move into and crabs usually don't die as a result of these battles. So, the fight is on. &nb...
I got me some hermit crabs today. 2 of them - Jacques (not named after the crab in finding nemo) and Martin. I had to go to 2 pet stores to get them - the first one I went to was really not very nice. The crabs were kept in a tank with gravel in the bottom (not the best environment for them) and the employees were cleaning the tank out and just tossing the poor little crabs around in there. You're not supposed to do that, their little internal organs can rupture quite ea...
