Over the years, video games have sparked many debates regarding the welfare of kids who play them. From arguments that some games promote violence or discourage social growth all the way to how certain games might help ease anxiety, everyone seems to have an opinion on the topic. To complicate matters further, the answer is rather nuanced - there is no "right" or "wrong" in these arguments; often, the answer tends to come down to circumstances and a number of other variables. To be honest, I ...
Amid complaints from brick-and-mortar retailers in India, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs proposed a ban on flash sales on e-commerce platforms and preventing affiliate entities from being listed as sellers on Monday evening. These policies are in response to a rise in concern about what retailers allege as unfair practices employed by Amazon and Flipkart in the second largest market in the world. In its proposal, India's Ministry of Consumer Affairs suggests that e-commerce firms should ...

A couple of months ago, I talked a little about the fun virtual trivia night that I held with my coworkers via Discord. Now that vaccinations are rolling out and things are starting to open up again, we’re hoping to hold the next one in a Family Feud style, and in person - but that’s another discussion. Over the last year, I - like many millions of others - have had to find ways to stay connected with friends and family without being able to hang out in the same room. To ...
Amazon Prime Day is coming up and Amazon has decided to offer free 7 day trials to its game streaming service, Luna, to Prime members in the mainland US. Until now, the only way to test Luna was to request early access or sign up from supported Fire TV devices. The Luna service is available on Windows PC, Mac, Fire TV, and via the web on your iPhone, iPad, and certain Android phones. The regular price for Luna is $5.99 a month and grants you access to games like GRID, Metro Exo...
I used to enjoy changing the login or lock screen on Windows. We had LogonStudio which was a great tool for customization, but as Windows progressed versions the ability to customize it was pretty much gone. In Windows 10 you can set to your selected image or slideshow or use the Windows Spotlight feature which picks a daily image for you to display. You can also select certain apps that will show a quick status on the screen such as your calendar or mail app. I usually don't pay much attenti...

During the development of a game, many ideas will look good on paper only to be found to not work out in practice. Normally, these ideas get killed off before implementation and even fewer ever get seen by the public. In the case of Galactic Civilizations IV, because we’re going out in ALPHA, you will get to see some ideas fully implemented that we have already decided didn’t work out. Today’s example for discussion: The Ideology compass. Here’s how it ...
For this entry, we are going to give you a tour of Galactic Civilizations IV as it exists, in alpha state, in June 2021. We’re very excited. There’s a lot in here but so very much more to do. Note : I’m playing at 5K so I’m smushing my screenshots down so that they’re not quite so huge. Choosing a Civilization For the Alpha, you can only play as the humans. This is because we intend to make the civilizations much more distinc...
I have been gaming online for a long time - since I was a teenager and Battle.net (I played a lot of Diablo II and Starcraft) was first a thing, in fact. Back then, the biggest thing I remember my parents being concerned about were mostly safety things: don’t give out your name or address, don’t share pictures, and for the love of all that is holy, don’t EVER agree to meet someone you’ve only met online. They’re not bad rules - they’re good rules, ...
You know what I miss? Conventions. Things obviously ground to a halt last year as COVID made its rounds across the world, shutting down big events and huge gatherings of people. Many of the larger conventions like San Diego Comic Con, New York Comic Con, E3, and others, turned to an online format in order to try and salvage at least some of their events. It doesn't beat being there in person, but hey - at least it's something! Me at the Star Control: Origins booth, E3 2018 Now, thing...
