Tonight my son and I attended the SEMBA bee keeping user group.  We had a good time and met a lot of interesting and very friendly people. I was really impressed and energized by just how helpful and kind the folks at the meeting were to us.  In a single meeting, we got more help and more tips on how to get things going than I'd managed to pick up on the web in the past couple of weeks. The next step is to take some bee keeping classes while the equipment comes in and to start ...

My class and I went on a hiking field trip last week to our local mountains: I'd never been hiking. This particular hiking trip has been described as "gentle" by a web site. The park ranger said it was more at the moderate level, but NOTHING we couldn't handle. So, hearing this, I thought all would be okay. You could imagine my surprise when, about five minutes into the walk (with me leading a long trail of kids), I was almost out of breath. I couldn't believe it....and we still ...
As a kid, I was afraid of bees. I mean, hysterically afraid.  To be fair, I probably had good reason, I'd been stung hundreds of times by the time I was 12.  I grew up next to a swamp and was constantly getting stung by bees, hornets, wasps, etc.  Admittedly, most of the stings were due to my own idiocy. Okay, nearly all were due to idiocy.  One time, after getting stung when I was 8, I "declared war" on the big wasp nest and attacked it with a stick.  The wasps won....
When your pets get old or injured or just very ill and that dreaded time comes to put them down, a decision we pet owners hate to make, then we have to make another gut wrenching choice. Do we stay at their side as they slowly slip into death? or do we choose to leave them there, go home and weep in privacy? Do we want our last memory of our loved ones to be of them dead or alive? After thought: I am not thinking about putting one of my own animals down, thank GOD they are 10 but so far...

One of my tabbies, Sampson, has been sneezing for the last couple of days.  Other than that, he does not seem the worse for wear (well his puppy dog watery eyes are not normal).  But this morning at 6am my wife decided that there was something seriously wrong with him.  So she called the 7x24 Vet place and off we went as the sun was rising (it really did not rise today as it was rainy). Sampson is one of the 3 pound rescue siblings my wife rescued and I adopted (when we were st...

Ben can be seen in the pictures below playing mum to the ducklings, he doesn’t let them out of his sight, not too far anyway. He lets them cuddle and huddle for warmth too. Ben and his little flock can be seen in Pennywell Farm in Buckfastleigh in Devon. My son called me a few nights ago. Aly's favorite Golden Retriever back home lay dying. This dog is one of the victims of the latest pet food fiasco. They had given the dog surgery cleaning out the stomach but to no avail. He called me the next morning and said Aly's sister came home to find the dog dead near the door when she got home that morning. He said Aly was having a really hard time. She talked about this dog all the time, even talking to the dog over the phone while away at c...
I am not sentimental about animals, but I do strongly believe that like humans they too have rights and the right to life is preminent amongst them. A few weeks back in a city reputed to be the software capital of the emerging markets, a pack of street dogs or ferral animals attacked a child and mauled him so badly that he died. I admit that this is a horrific tragedy and my heart goes out to the parents whose only child died in this unspeakable manner. The reaction of the civic authorities ...
So, I've been going to my friend's house for a weight workout. Her husband is our trainer. We meet upstairs in this great big room all set up with weights and such. This is over a very big warehouse that we have to maneuver through to get there. On the way up the stairs we pass by boxes and boxes of supplies and big drafting tables and all sorts of things that make his business run. Upstairs it's comfortable with racks and racks of clothing on the side that we pass by to get to the ...

For those of you who know her, our cat, Pumpkin, is not well at the moment. She has developed a cough because of some sort of chest infection that won’t clear up. We’ve taken her to the vets a couple of times and each time, they’ve prescribed antibiotics. The cough clears and she is fine but as soon as the prescription is finished, she starts coughing again. It is not all the time, only once or twice a day but it is worrying because she has always been fit and healthy. I’ve had her now...
